THIS BAD GIRL
Going through the Bible, we read about amazing women who made history. I have enjoyed reading about Sarah, Rahab, Ruth, Hannah, Bathsheba and Mary. There are so many lessons to learn from these women. None the less I’d like to talk to you today about one bad girl who has fascinated me. The Bible, you know, does refer to both good girls and bad girls. Now why would God record in His word stories about bad girls? Well, for the same reason He records stories about good girls. So that we can analyze their lives, see what we can learn from them, repeat what is good and avoid what is bad. So let’s take a look today at the story of probably one of the baddest girls ever recorded in the Bible. That is the story of Jezebel.
Now, if you have ever been a bad girl, or maybe even leaned toward being a bad girl, someone at some time may have referred to you as a Jezebel. I hope not, but some have been. Her name has come to represent the worst of the bad girls. Some readers may not be familiar with her background, some may need a refresher. Her Biblical story can be found in the 1st and 2nd chapters of Kings.
If Jezebel strolled into a boardroom today, she’d be hired in a heartbeat. Intelligent, courageous, and assertive, she was a born leader with considerable influence who boldly took on the competition and got things done.
You can only imagine what will happen when such a woman honors the Lord. As in, great things will happen. But this pushy Phoenician princess worshiped Baal, a fertility god. Yes indeed, she had great qualities but look what she did with them: She had a finely tuned mind, but used it to devise evil schemes. She had boldness and courage, but used those attributes to commit murder. She had strong leadership abilities, but used them to take over the throne. She had an assertive personality, but used it to draw people away from God. She had a royal lineage, but used it to manipulate her subjects. Jezebel is the Lady Macbeth of the Bible.
So what lessons can we learn from this bad girl?
First of all, for the singles out there We must learn that the person we decide to marry may bring their religion to the marriage. Her hubby was certainly not one of history’s good guys. In fact, Ahab “did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him” (1 Kings 16:30). Topping the list of Ahab’s sins? “He married Jezebel … and began to serve Baal and worship him” (1 Kings 16:31). 1 Kings 21:25 summarizes the situation, “But there was none like unto Ahab, who did sell himself to do that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.”
It is important that we decide to marry someone who will be faithful to God. We are to seek God’s kingdom first in our lives (Matthew 6:33) and this would be in regard to the choice we have for a spouse as well. The person we marry will have a position of great influence over our lives. They will have input on matters related to our money, our schedule, our children, our activities, and our worship. It is the greatest place of influence that a person might have in another’s life. That influence can be either for good or for bad depending upon what kind of person we marry. Therefore, we would do well to marry a faithful Christian.
Secondly, for wives, the only person who saw Ahab as weak was Jezebel. It may be our strong-willed nature – and not their weak-willed one – that makes them appear “less than”. So, let’s pray for a gentler, more supportive spirit.
Also, we as women of Christ can learn from Jezebel to be loyal and dedicated to our worship of Christ. We need to be the power behind our families and be the spiritual guide to those Christ brings into our presents. Jezebel brought people of the LORD to worship baal. We need to bring those people the LORD brings to us toward a closer walk with Him. We need to demonstrate the same kind of tenacity and conviction to direct the Will and the Way of Christ to our families and those who are placed in our path.
Then, as a wife, be indispensable. I believe one of the reasons why Jezebel had so much of an influence on Ahab was that she could get him what she wanted. She had balls, she could get things done. This does not equate to washing of boxers and clothes only. She could help him get information that would land him that contract, she knows what he likes and find out in advance how to get them, then relay the information to him, when he hits a wall he comes to her, he may sulk like Ahab but when she asks him, they will reason for a solution together. She gradually weaves herself like a toxic poison into his life and he cannot do without her, she is not one of those pushover girls mind you, her sharp rebuff will mellow him and he would not want to see her dark side.
Lastly, as a worker, no one wants to work for a witch. When we have a legitimate leadership role, let’s do it with grace and compassion. They say women in power tend to misbehave are not only bitchy to other women but hold on to it like the last of the nine lives of a cat. we can see here not only did it affect her, it affected every single person around her- her husband died because of her, all her kids followed in her foot step, she murdered her grand children except for Joash. This woman had a lot going on, she was vile wicked and selfish, she left everywhere a sea of destruction. Power in the right hands is a virtue, think Margaret Thatcher in her prime but a fab’ one.
Stay Blessed!

Infact, I didnt ever think there was anything Jezebel hd to offer me. “Jezebel” is a name synonymous with evil; she is the epitome of the wicked woman. So infamous is her name that, to this day, no one names their baby daughter “Jezebel.” To call a woman a “Jezebel” is the greatest insult imaginable. But, we learn everyday. Good points to imbibe.

Another lesson here, There are times when God allows evil to reign and good suffers. But, evil cannot conquer good. There was never a time in Israel, during the reign of Ahab and Jezebel, where God did not have representatives of His truth, teaching His way. And that is certainly the case today as well. The people of God may be a very small minority on the earth today, but just like in ancient Israel God will not have a time when His truth is not being taught, where His people are not living the truth as an example of the right way to live no matter how small that group may seem. How ridiculed they may be. Evil cannot conquer good. Goodmorning, Ezar.

More to that, evil is contagious. Sometimes our wives may not realize the incredible power that they possess. Jezebel knew precisely what that power was and was able to use it for her own selfish ends. A wife can encourage, can support, can back, can help her husband or like Jezebel she can send him, through his own weakness, it is not completely her fault of course, no doubt about that. They shared responsibility here. We can either be a help to one another as husband and wife, or we can be a discouragement to one another. We can actually entice one another to do evil. So, some of the most evil things that Ahab is accused of doing, and rightly so, have Jezebel tied together in that evil, hand in hand, and this God condemns. Both he and Jezebel were involved. She enticed him, stirred him continually toward that. You might keep a finger here in 1 Kings. Look at Proverbs 22. This is why parents often warn their children about their acquaintances and who they hang around with, because those people that we spend our time with do have and effect on us.

I agree with you, Alex. God will eventually punish evil and of course the emphasis is on the word: eventually. As we’ve said there have been times and will be times in the future when God will allow evil temporary dominance over good. Temporary sway over good, but God says: Vengeance, payback, is His and He will take care of that at the perfect time, in the perfect way. No matter how bad evil gets, God will bring His Kingdom. He will intervene. He will rescue the earth and that is something we can learn from Jezebel as well. It teaches us that God will always intervene, and in one case in the final time to destroy evil and introduce instead, good. So no matter how bad it looks on the surface, God is in charge and He will bring an end to evil. And that is very good news. That is in fact the news of the Kingdom of God. That is the Gospel we preach. So while the story of Jezebel is a sad accounting of lust and corruption, misuse of power, idolatry, murder and greed, God has recorded it for our benefit. So not only do we learn from the righteous examples but we learn from the evil as well. So let’s strive to learn all we can and put all these into practice.

Yes,Valerie. Ruling your country is one thing; ruling your husband is another. God offers a different model of leadership. Though we are equal in God’s eyes and co-laborers in the kingdom, in the home the husband is the head of the wife.

Thank u, Ezar. It has been said that “when a woman rules, the order of nature is inverted.” Ruling your husband is not God’s plan and will never gain His approval. A strong-willed nature and aggressive spirit may be admired in today’s world, but we are admonished to follow the instruction of (I Pet. 3:3-4).

Many wives live daily with a husband who is not a spiritual leader, but more suited to following. Ahab was such a man. He did not have a strong faith. He needed a strong woman as his wife. He chose the wrong woman. God help us men to choose wisely.

Perhaps, Jezebel, used her personal resources to benefit herself. Maybe, she presented her causes in their best light. Maybe, she told her tales in the best light to represent herself. Perhaps, she did the very best with the resources that she had. Maybe, her best resource was her own self. Jezebel, did what she needed to do, to survive. Right or wrong, she addressed her immediate needs. Is she really that different from a modern, up-to-date, educated woman? Do we not preach this very thing, use every weapon in your arsenal? Ladies, do we not teach our daughters assertiveness at every turn? Do we not teach ‘ girl power ‘? Have you thought once, at any time, what ……..’girl power’ is? Jezebel, like Cain lives in all of us. The difference that separates us, is who we are committed to.

I think every woman is influential whether or not we use this for good or bad is up to us. It does go to show how desperately evil a gift gone bad can be. I also think that she represents one of womens greatest weaknesses and that isthe illusion of thinking we are in control or that we can control and overpower events and unpleasant situations either by manipulation or angry outburst. I don’t know that she was so inclined to please her husband in killing the poor man for his garden as much as she was determined to show up her husband. There is huge difference between being assertive and being cruel, manipulative, and controlling. True assertiveness requires none of these things.

She went against God’s aim for marriage. She was a poor excuse for a wife. Wickedness may prevail for a season, but God’s righteousness will eventually triumph over the forces of evil. May God help us women to be godly supports in our marriages.

Jezebel must have been a very beautiful woman too or should I say she was very particular about her looks. Ladies, remember, true beauty is in the heart. Without a heart relationship with Christ, there is no real beauty. The outward beauty we see passes away with time. I remember once an actress; in her 60’s lament the passing of time as her enemy. If all you have is outward beauty, time is indeed your enemy as your outward beauty WILL pass away! Seek, by God’s grace the inner manna of the heart.

May I also add that she had an unrelenting commitment to her god. Despite living at a time of great miracles and hearing the voice of the mighty prophet Elijah, Jezebel never let go of her commitment to Baal, her idol-god. There is something to be learned from her determination that nothing was going to cause her to walk away from her faith. She also instilled deep faith of her idols in her children. Jezebel did a great job of passing on her faith to her children. They all hung onto Baal as tenaciously as she did. She passed on the wrong faith, but the intensity with which she instilled that faith in her children challenges us to do the same with the truth of Jesus. Bless you, Ezar.

Seriously Dumebi, with her sharp tongue, manipulative style, and misdirected devotion, Jezebel is the perfect anti-role model. Imagine my dismay when I discovered a few similarities between her take-charge ways and my strong-natured self, especially when I studied Jezebel’s relationship with her less-aggressive husband, who is a bit like mine. It takes grace not to take advantage of it. Valerie and Kandyce are right.

Jezebel had a ‘sister’ in d New Testament-Herodias. Herodias is often viewed as playing Jezebel to John’s Elijah. Like Jezebel before her, she was a controlling power over her husband, and like Jezebel, that control was for the worse. I would have to add, though, that like the original sinners in the Garden of Eden, we cannot lay the blame solely upon Herodias. Her greatest sins could not have been committed without the collusion of Herod Antipas, her husband. Had he truly upheld his proper role as spiritual head of his own household, had he exhibited the strength of will and thought that one should hope for in a political leader, then all her machinations would have come to naught. Summing up the sin of Herodias, envy and jealousy, a direct breach of the tenth commandment, not only brought about her ruin in the end, but destroyed the whole of her life. What poison there is in covetousness! Here was a woman who had it all, several times over, and yet, could take no joy in what life had afforded her. She had every advantage that the society of her day could afford her but it was never enough. She must have more, be greater. In her pursuit of this unattainable end she not only stripped herself of joy, but destroyed her family as well. Her lust for prominence led directly to the infamous end of her husband. Her endless machinations, having involved her daughter, destroyed her daughter as well, as she passed the poison onward. We may tend to think that covetousness is a light matter. We may see it as a minor sin, at least to the degree that we suffer from that issue. Well, sure, I see so and so has the latest technological gizmo and I wish I had it myself. So what? Everybody thinks that way. Yes, that assessment is true. Everybody does think that way, and the whole advertising industry is banking on that fact. They have discovered that feeding our covetousness is a great way of feeding their own. But, where does it lead? Sadly, we are so willing to minimize the seedling sin of covetousness that we refuse to deal with it until it has metastasized. Only as it grows strong enough to bring us to violence and theft in the pursuit of our untamed desires do we see the problem and by then it is too late for many. Oh, that we would see the Law of God through the eyes of Jesus! Oh, that we would not stop at the bare wording of the commandment, but would understand the implications of sin unchecked. Oh, that we would deal with our sins while they are still easily uprooted, rather than waiting until they have worked their deadly way upon us!

Oh my, can we not even start with this bitch, Herodias. Her mentor was Jezebel, if I may say. Herodias was a woman who was well aware of her power and she wielded it around like a weapon of mass destruction . She leaves us with a long list of lessons on the wife we don’ t want to be , but today , I want to reflect on just one. Herodias was a manipulator. When she didn ’ t like what she heard , she began to devise a plan to kill the messenger. When she knew her husband wouldn’ t join in on her grand design of the murderous kind, she decided to take things into her own hands and begin manipulating the circumstances until she got what she wanted . At the expense of her daughter’s virtue and character , she not only taught her daughter how to become a master at manipulation , she also taught her that her virtue had no value and her body could buy her way through life .
Herodias failed miserably as a wife and a mother… all because she didn’ t like hearing the truth . She mistakenly thought that silencing her accuser would also silence her seared conscience . Unfortunately, she found murder only intensified the shouts of accusation that hardened her face as well as her heart . We may never go as far as Herodias to manipulate our circumstances , but how often have we taken things into our own hands ? How many times have we pushed things through , changed things around, told half – truths and even out – right lied to get our way? How often have we plotted a pay – back scheme as a means of retaliation for our husbands failures ? It’ s never wise to want our way so much that we’ re willing to order our own steps instead of allowing God to do so . It’ s never wise to refuse rebuke or devise details that would set our own circumstantial wheels in motion .

Ezar, I love this, really. Let’s face it, our husbands will eventually make decisions we do not like. He may even disappoint us with inaction. In these situations we need to consider what action would be pleasing to God not ourselves. Our relationship with our husband mirrors our relationship with God. We need to trust that God will guide and convict our husbands properly. Will there be times our husbands are not pleasing the Lord or not considering the Lord when making a decision? Yes. Yet, it is still not our role to manipulate him or force his hand even if we believe it is God’s will. We need to trust our husband’s discernment and that he will allow the Lord to guide him. If we continually make decisions for him we take away his role as the spiritual leader and deafen his ears to the call of God. We will certainly be working outside the will of God. We exhibit obedience to God by not giving into our flesh.
