We know that when we empower girls, everybody benefits. Girls who are educated, healthy and free can transform their communities and pass on the benefits to their children, and to their children’s children.

Yet the reality is that most women are still treated as second-class citizens of this world; girls are almost completely ignored. Girls have no status, no protection and no prospects in many families and communities – and this is simply the way things are. Inequality is so entrenched that it isn’t even questioned.

That is why today, the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD, marks an important step. Even more important, I believe, is the fact that EMPOWER GIRLS has been chosen as the official theme for the day. At last, we are recognising that girl child who has been invisible for so long. The world’s 1.1 billion girls are a source of power, energy, and creativity – and the millions of girls in emergencies are no exception. This year’s International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11 marks the beginning of a year-long effort to spur global attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face before, during, and after crises. Only when investments in programs for girls on issues that particularly affect them – due to both their age and gender – are complemented with corresponding investments in data on girls, can we make real progress towards greater accountability in domains of critical importance to them.

No society will flourish and no peace agreement will be lasting without empowering girls in peace building and reconstruction. It is time to put this imperative at the heart of all of our efforts in addressing fragility, conflict and violence. This is UNESCO’s message today.

Empowering young girls will require women to embrace the challenge. Girls require role models and guidance. They require the opportunity to see their own gender present in the landscape before them. This landscape needs to be of women leaders who encourage girls to be equal to men in power and worth, unrestricted by gender.

And so, Just Us Girls, in collaboration with Glows & Sparkles is offering free Makeup Training to five girls in Ibadan, Oyo state.
